Os verbos modais e auxiliares parecem bastante difíceis de entender, somente com a prática conseguimos compreende-los melhor, pensando nisso, separamos algumas atividades que podem elucidar melhor a utilização desses tempos.

8) Essa resposta é boa para você entender que tudo depende do contexto. Se desejamos fazer um convite para chamar a pessoa para ir junto, usamos o would. Agora se a intenção é saber se o indivíduo vai conosco, pode-se empregar will. Veja:

I’m going. Would you come with me? – Eu estou indo. Você viria comigo?

I’m going. Will you come with me? – Eu estou indo. Você vai comigo?

9) Essa pergunta poderia ter mais de uma resposta: as letras a, b e d. Porém, vamos entender o contexto, que é uma conversa informal, pois é com um amigo. Apesar de as 3 formas poderem ser utilizadas para fazer pedidos ou solicitações, can é mais informal. Could é um pouco mais educado e would é a mais formal das três opções.

10) As letras b e c estão corretas! Essa questão é bem parecida com a anterior, mas algo muito importante se altera aqui: o contexto! Nesse exemplo o interlocutor está em um ambiente formal, logo ele precisa usar alguns mais educados para pedir permissão, caso de may e could, por exemplo.

A função dos verbos modais é mudar ou complementar o sentido do verbo principal, expressando ideias de possibilidade, obrigação, dedução, desejo, proibição, vontade, capacidade, etc. Veja, a seguir, os verbos modais e o que cada um, basicamente, expressa:

Can (capacidade): I can run for a long time. (Eu posso correr por muito tempo)

Could (possibilidade): I could do it, but I don’t want. (Eu poderia fazer isso, mas eu não quero)

Might (probabilidade): You might go with me. (Você pode ir comigo).

Should (conselho): You should visit your mother. (Você deveria visitar sua mãe)

May (pedido): May I go to the party? (Eu posso ir na festa?)

Must (obrigação): He must study English. (Ele deve estudar inglês)

Ought to (conselho): You ought to know Rio de Janeiro. (Você deveria conhecer o Rio de Janeiro)
